Many of the “Black Robes,” the term for Jesuits by natives, came from Belgium and France, and these next two columns show the radically different landscape of the northern Rockies. “Approach Towards the Mountains” shows the faint outlines of the Rockies in the distance. The ravine Devil’s Gate was the entrance to Flathead territory, and the second piece shows weary travelers camp next to the Gate. Point lived in France, so the Great Rockies were quite a sight to the Jesuit. “Arrival at the Rockies” and “Camping at the Mountains” show the mountainous land of the Flatheads, Coeur d’Alene and Blackfoot.
