Wired: Term “Abortion” removed from U.S.-funded health database

April 4th, 2008 by LOCL

According to the Wired Blog Network, “A U.S. government-funded medical information site that bills itself as the world’s largest database on reproductive health has quietly begun to block searches on the word abortion, concealing nearly 25,000 search results.” There was no notice of the change on the site.

The database, POPLINE, is a product of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. At present, “Abortion” does appear in the online index, which suggests the use of alternate term “Fertility Control, Postconception” in keyword searches.
