You are invited to the University Libraries second Speaker Series for 2009-2010.  Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient, Aleksandar Hemon will discuss his prize winning work, <em>The Lazarus Project</em>, on <strong>Tuesday,October 27. 6:00 p.m. in the Crown Center Auditorium</strong>, Lake Shore Campus. Hemon&#8217;s works also include three collections of short stories:  <em>The Question of Bruno; Nowhere Man</em>, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and <em>Love and Obstacles</em>.  Aleksandar Hemon was born in Sarajevo and visited Chicago in 1992, intending to stay for a matter of months.  While he was here, Sarajevo came under siege, and he was unable to return home.  This Bosnian born, Chicago-based writer tells the stories and moral discoveries that come with displacement.  </p>

These changes also altered individual lives. Jian Ping, author of Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China will give a personal account of the devastating impact of the Cultural Revolution on individuals. She will also offer an insider’s view on how personal values changes with the economic development, and how the Chinese citizens responded to hosting the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. </p>

<p>Loyola alumna and crime mystery writer, <strong>Theresa Schwegel </strong>will discuss how the city of Chicago “stars” in her books. Schwegel, a Chicago native, has garnered several accolades for her writing including the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel in 2005, and the 2008 Chicago Public Library’s 21st Century Award for achievement in writing. </p>

<p>MacArthur &#8220;genius&#8221; Stuart Dybek and critically acclaimed master of the short story, will present &#8220;Loyola in Fiction&#8221;. He will read a few passages from a few of his short stories, &#8220;Seiche&#8221; and &#8220;Lunch at the Loyola Arms&#8221; and talk about the sense of place and the role of autobiography in fiction.  Q &amp; A and reception will follow.   </p>
<p>Dybek&#8217;s work is heavily influence by his experiences growing up in Little Village-Pilsen, a diverse immigrant neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago. The Chicago Tribune described his works as &#8220;Spellbinding stories that are, by turns, hilarious, stunning and tragic, but always deeply moving, genuine and compassionate.&#8221; </p>
<p>Mr. Dybek received a bachelor degree and later a M.A. in literature from Loyola University Chicago and a M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. He currently teaches at Northwestern University after more than 30 years teaching at Western Michigan University, where he remains an Adjunct Professor of English and a member of the permanent faculty of the renowned Prague Summer Program.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p align="left"><img align="right" width="203" src="http://blogs.lib.luc.edu/locl/files/2008/10/gitelson1.jpg" alt="gitelson1.jpg" height="239" />The University Libraries will hold its next Library Speaker Series event on Thursday, October 23rd 2008 at the Lakeshore Campus. The topic of this event is <em><strong>The 2008 Election: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  </strong></em>Dr. Alan Gitelson, professor of Political Science at Loyola University Chicago, will give a timely overview and analysis of the 2008 elections. His focus will be on key aspects of a political campaign including the nomination process, campaign financing, campaign strategy, tactics, polling, and the role of the media in the campaign.  There will also be a question and answer period during the event.  Dr. Gitelson is a frequent guest commentator on radio and television for political and election issues, as well as a faculty author.  His book, <em>American Government</em>, is in its eight edition. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img border="0" align="right" width="1" src="http://blogs.lib.luc.edu/locl/files/2008/09/kevdav-340-dtd-revised2.jpg" alt="kevdav-340-dtd-revised2.jpg" height="1" /><img align="right" src="http://blogs.lib.luc.edu/locl/files/2008/09/kevdav-340-dtd-revised2.jpg" alt="kevdav-340-dtd-revised2.jpg" />The University Libraries will hold its first Library Speaker Series event for 2008-2009 on Thursday, September 18th 2008 at the Water Tower Campus.  We are delighted to have Kevin Davis, veteran journalist and Loyola author, as our guest speaker.  Mr. Davis is a part-time journalism instructor at Loyola University Chicago and adjunct faculty member at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Studies.  His work has been featured in several publications including the <strong><em>Chicago Tribune</em></strong> and the <strong><em>American Bar Association Journal</em></strong>.  Mr. Davis will discuss his latest non-fiction work, <em>Defending the Damned: Inside a Dark Corner of the Criminal Justice System, </em>a story about a team of battle-scarred lawyers fighting against all odds in Chicago&#8217;s Cook County Public Defender&#8217;s Office.  Davis&#8217; reporting gives the audience an insider&#8217;s look at a day in the life of public defenders and the challenges they face as life and death hang in the balance. <em> Defending the Damned</em> is a story that captivates readers by mixing courtroom drama and true-crime journalism into one good read.  </p>
