Daniel H. Burnham, creator of 1909 Plan of Chicago.

The University Archives has two new exhibits on display in the Cudahy Library Donovan Reading Room. The north wall cases of the Donovan Reading room celebrate the Centennial of Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. Materials from the University Archives and Special Collections highlight the City of Chicago before the creation of the plan; the Great Chicago Fire; the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893; the 1909 Plan of Chicago and Chicago after the Burnham Plan. Principles of the Burnham Plan still resonate today as the City of Chicago plans for the future.

Biology Class, Loyola University Chicago, 1960.

The south wall cases of the Donovan Reading room feature selections from the Jesuitica Collection highlighted by images of Loyola Jesuits who have taught in the respective areas displayed. Comprised of works in the areas of Philosophy, Theology, History, Literature, Classical Studies, and the Sciences, this exhibit pays homage to the liberal arts foundation of Loyola.

Mundelein College published the inaugural issue of its student newspaper The Skyscraper on January 30, 1931, during the college’s first year of operation. The Skyscraper informed the Mundelein community about local and national events as well as “all the news, views, rumor, and humor of the students of Mundelein College.” The newspaper was an entirely student-run operation and continued to be published until May 1969.

The Skyscraper Newspaper Collection contains digital scans of the complete run of The Skyscraper from 1931 until 1969 and is keyword-searchable across the collection. Please visit: http://www.luc.edu/wla/Digital_Collections_.shtml to access the collection. The original Skyscraper newspapers are part of the Mundelein College Records and Photograph Collection, held at the Women & Leadership Archives.
