You are invited to the University Libraries second Speaker Series for 2009-2010. Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient, Aleksandar Hemon will discuss his prize winning work, The Lazarus Project, on Tuesday,October 27. 6:00 p.m. in the Crown Center Auditorium, Lake Shore Campus. Hemon’s works also include three collections of short stories: The Question of Bruno; Nowhere Man, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and Love and Obstacles. Aleksandar Hemon was born in Sarajevo and visited Chicago in 1992, intending to stay for a matter of months. While he was here, Sarajevo came under siege, and he was unable to return home. This Bosnian born, Chicago-based writer tells the stories and moral discoveries that come with displacement.

The Fall 2009 One Book, One Chicago program is presented by the Chicago Public Library, and Loyola University Libraries will host the discussion of this year’s selection:
Carl Smith’s The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City on Thursday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Rm. 723, Lewis Library, 25 East Pearson, WTC.
Loyola alumna and Chicago Public Librarian, Janette Kopacz will facilitate the discussion. Mayor Daley described this book as “essential to understanding our city’s evolution from prairie, to industrial hub, to the city we know today.”
Please come join us and invite your friends and colleagues as we learn about Chicago’s history and Burnham’s determination to “Make No Little Plans.”

In honor of Archives Month the Loyola University Archives and Special Collections will be hosting two open houses.

Loyola University Chicago Charter, 1909
The first open house will be Wednesday, October 21st, and the second will be on Thursday, October 29th. Both will run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Each open house will have a different theme so remember to come to both! Learn about the collections and services that are available.
This event will be held in the Loyola University Archives, room 218, Cudahy Library.

A recent addition to the Cudahy Library Reference Collection, American History through Literature, 1820-1870 and American History through Literature, 1870-1920, place literature in historical and cultural context. Many entries are illustrated; all end with a bibliography of additional reading, both primary and secondary. To view the Pegasus record for the 1820-1870 volumes, click here. For the 1870-1920 volumes, click here. All six volumes are temporarily on display in the Klarchek Information Commons on floor two. Their permanent home will be in the Reference Collection on the main level of Cudahy Library.
